AutoWeek Breaks Major Cadillac News in March 26 Issue

Lutz confirms development under way on new Cadillac V12

The AutoWeek March 26th issue reveals General Motors Holden division is well on the way to creating a new V12- powered Cadillac flagship.
In its cover story AutoWeek divulges that GM’s Australian brand Holden is developing the hardware for an opulent V12-engined supersedan that draws its design inspiration from the 2003 Cadillac Sixteen concept car, a car that would return the high-line GM division as The Standard of the World. The story is written by Greg Kable, with reporting by Julian Rendell.
AutoWeek reports that the distinctively styled, rear-wheel-drive model is positioned at the top of the range, with a list of high-end features never before offered on a Cadillac, including the latest in crash avoidance and safety technology. The car, dubbed Cadillac Twelve, would compete with Mercedes-Benz S Class, the BMW 7 Series and Audi A8, among others.
AutoWeek sources say the V12-powered flagship essentially mates two of the firm’s 60-degree 3.6-liter V6 engines on a common crankshaft. The V12 will feature direct injection, cylinder deactivation and a state-of-the-art automatic gearbox to ensure competitive levels of power and economy.
GM global product vice president Bob Lutz, a longtime proponent of a luxury grand touring sedan for Cadillac, confirms development of the V12. All that remains is whether Lutz can convince GM’s bean counters to put the Cadillac into production.

Are You the Ultimate Tradesman? IRWIN Industrial Tools(R) and NASCAR Driver Jamie McMurray Want to Know How You Measure Up

–Nationwide Contest Will Award Chance to Win $1.26 Million Dollar Prize in Addition to New Roush Supercharged Ford F-150 to the Ultimate Tradesman–

NASCAR NEXTEL Cup driver Jamie McMurray, of the #26 IRWIN Industrial Tools Roush Fenway Racing team, is joining forces with IRWIN Industrial Tools, a Newell Rubbermaid(R) company, to conduct a nationwide search for America’s top tradesman. The IRWIN Ultimate Tradesman Challenge will launch in Texas on April 11 and follow the NASCAR NEXTEL Cup Series schedule into 14 racing markets throughout the United States, in addition to multiple non-racing markets around the country.

Seventy-five million adult NASCAR fans live in the United States and 27 percent of them earn a living by using tools on the job. IRWIN Industrial Tools is providing these consumers, and others, with the chance to become a millionaire. The Ultimate Tradesman grand-prize winner will receive a new 2007 supercharged Ford F-150 pick-up truck customized by Roush Performance, a dream barbeque with Jamie McMurray and the #26 IRWIN race team at their home, and the chance to win $1.26 million dollars.

“IRWIN tools and accessories are being used on job sites every day by tradesmen all over the country, so we figured, ‘Why not create a fun, but competitive contest where people can show off their skills?’” said McMurray. “Speed and precision are essential for success on the race track, and contestants in this promotion will need both of these attributes to be successful in the IRWIN Ultimate Tradesman Challenge.”

Similar to that of a successful race team, Innovation and performance are two hallmarks of IRWIN Industrial Tools. In fact, our heritage is based on exceeding the expectations of the tradesman that uses our products. We created the Ultimate Tradesman Challenge to share our passion for tools and accessories with professional tradesmen and DIYers, and reach our end users where they work, play, buy and learn.

The Ultimate Tradesman Challenge will travel around the country from April through November making stops in the following NASCAR NEXTEL Cup Series race markets: Atlanta, Dallas, Phoenix, Talladega, Ala., Richmond, Va., Charlotte, N.C., Pocono, Pa., Kansas City, Kan., Daytona, Fla., Chicago, Watkins Glen, N.Y., Michigan, Dover, Del. and Fontana, Calif. Additionally, local challenge events will be held in multiple markets across the country.

Contestants can visit local retailers and industrial distributors, Wednesday through Friday during race week, to enter the Ultimate Tradesman Challenge. Each participant will be asked to measure, mark and drill a piece of wood, using IRWIN tools, as quickly and accurately as possible.

Contestants with the 30 fastest times in the local market challenges will advance to regional events to be held in May (Charlotte), September (metro Los Angeles) or November (Texas). The three regional finalists will then compete against each other for the title of “Ultimate Tradesman” on November 11 during the Phoenix race weekend and the ultimate tradesman will be given a chance to win $1.26 million.

Local challenge event winners will receive race tickets to their local race and IRWIN apparel and merchandise. Regional challenge winners will receive a $10,000 cash prize, race tickets, an IRWIN racing jacket and an IRWIN tool bag filled with professional grade product.

The IRWIN Industrial Tools Ultimate Tradesman Challenge is another example of the company’s commitment to its distributor partners and end users. IRWIN is constantly seeking innovative and performance tested products to make the end user experience more productive and efficient. Steadfast in its dedication to NASCAR and their partnership with Roush Fenway Racing, IRWIN Industrial Tools returns to McMurray’s # 26 Ford for the 2007 season as the primary sponsor for eleven events, including races in Atlanta, Charlotte, Talladega and Daytona.

Tax credit help on Hybrid cars

March 19, 2007 Hybrids | Comments (0) admin @ 8:08 am

Hybrid and alternative-fuel vehicles are well-known for their green credentials, but they can also save you money on your taxes. Cars.com has taken the guesswork out of tax credits for green vehicle buyers by offering consumers information about cars that qualify for a credit and explaining how and when credits for popular hybrid vehicles are expected to be phased out.
Thanks to the Energy Policy Act of 2005, certain cars purchased in 2006 can earn credits of up to $4,000 and there is still time for buyers to take advantage of these credits in their 2006 filing. To be eligible for the credits, vehicles have to fall into one of four categories: fuel cell, advance lean burn technology, hybrid or alternative fuel. Currently, the only mass- market cars that qualify are hybrids and one natural-gas-powered car, the Honda Civic GX.
The IRS offers credits on a total of 14 cars, ranging from $250 to $4,000. Here is a list of those cars and their corresponding credits:

   Chevrolet:
     -- 2006 - 07 Silverado Hybrid: $250 (2WD) or $650 (4WD)

   Ford:
     -- 2005 - 07 Escape Hybrid: $2,600 (FWD) or $1,950 (AWD)
-- 2008 Escape Hybrid: $3,000 (FWD or AWD)

   GMC:
     -- 2006 - 07 Sierra Hybrid: $250 (2WD) or $650 (4WD)

   Honda:
     -- 2005 Accord Hybrid: $650
     -- 2006 - 07 Accord Hybrid: $1,300*
     -- 2005 Civic Hybrid: $1,700
     -- 2006 - 07 Civic Hybrid: $2,100
     -- 2007 Civic GX: $4,000**
     -- 2005 - 06 Insight: $1,450

   Lexus:
     -- 2007 GS 450h: $1,550***
     -- 2006 - 07 RX 400h: $2,200*** (FWD and AWD)

   Mercury:
     -- 2006 - 07 Mariner Hybrid: $1,950 (AWD only)
-- 2008 Mariner Hybrid: $2,200 (FWD and AWD)

   Nissan:
     -- 2007 Altima Hybrid: $2,350

   Toyota:
     -- 2007 Camry Hybrid: $2,600***
     -- 2006 - 07 Highlander Hybrid: $2,600*** (FWD and AWD)
     -- 2005 - 07 Prius: $3,150***

*2006 Accord without updated engine calibration eligible for $650 credit.
**Natural-gas powered Civic GX available in California and New York.
***Cars purchased by Sept. 30, 2006, earn the full credit. Those
purchased from Oct. 1, 2006, through the end of the year earn 50 percent
   of the credit.

For some cars, the amount you can claim depends on exactly when you bought the car. That’s because federal rules say that when a manufacturer sells 60,000 of its eligible cars — as reported to the government each quarter — the credits will start to be phased out.

The counter began ticking on Jan. 1, 2006. So far, Toyota is the only automaker to have reached the mark, selling its 60,000th hybrid car in the summer of 2006. As stipulated by the Energy Policy Act of 2005, consumers who purchased a Toyota or Lexus hybrid after Oct. 1, 2006, can claim 50 percent of the credit on their 2006 taxes — for example, $1,575 on a Prius instead of the original $3,150. The IRS phases out the credits in 50, 25 and zero percent steps over the course of a year. Toyota credits, for example, will fall to just 25 percent of the original amount starting April 1, 2007. Honda is expected to exceed the 60,000 mark this year, and other automakers will likely follow.
Under current legislation, the 60,000 quota is not scheduled to be raised.
There is still an opportunity for car buyers in the market today to earn credits on their 2007 taxes. For those seriously considering alternative fuel models, we recommend that they check with each manufacturer as some of the credits on more popular alternative fuel vehicles will be changing.

New, cheaper Garmin Nav units

March 15, 2007 GPS and Nav | Comments (0) admin @ 8:10 am

Garmin International, Inc., a unit of Garmin Ltd. (NASDAQ:GRMN) , today announced the nuvi 200, nuvi 250 and nuvi 270. This new family of entry-level GPS devices offers budget savvy consumers the benefit of a premium in-dash system at a fraction of the cost. As members of the nuvi family, these products carry the elegant styling and industry leading ease-of-use that has become the hallmark of Garmin’s nuvi product line.

Garmin Nuvi GPS unit

The nuvi family has taken the world by storm because of its extraordinary features and sleek look. The nuvi 200-series is destined to be another grand slam thanks to its ingenious design and low price point. This is the ideal out-of- the-box, entry-level car navigation system.

The ultra-slim nuvi 200-series makes using a GPS device easy for anyone. The nuvi’s new design incorporates an internal GPS antenna that makes it thinner and even easier to mount in a car. The intuitive “where to?” and “view map” welcome screen allows users to quickly find a specific street address or establishment’s name, or search for a destination by category. Turn-by-turn, voice-prompted directions then guide the driver to their destination. If they miss a turn along the route, the nuvi automatically recalculates a route and gets them back on track.

Those familiar with the travel kit feature available on premium nuvis will appreciate the nuvi 200-series’ built-in picture viewer, calculator, currency converter, unit converter and world clock. These new navigators are also compatible with Garmin’s line of rich content such as the Garmin Travel Guide(TM) and Garmin SaversGuide(R). For additional security, Garmin has included the Garmin Lock(TM), an innovative patent pending theft prevention system that disables the unit from performing any functions until the user types in a specific 4-digit PIN or takes the unit to a predetermined secure location.

Garmin has also added the ability for customers to augment the preloaded maps with custom points of interest (POI’s) from third parties such as school zones and safety cameras. The European versions of the nuvi 200-series come preloaded with speed camera information.

About the size of a deck of cards, the nuvi’s focal point is its bright 3.5-inch (diagonal) touchscreen. The unit’s only button is an on/off slider bar, which may be locked to avoid being turned on or off accidentally. The nuvi also has a convenient SD card slot for expandable memory.

The nuvi 200, nuvi 250 and nuvi 270 are expected to be available in April at an MSRP of $399.99, $499.99 and $599.99, respectively. The nuvi 200 includes preloaded detailed mapping of the contiguous United States (lower 48), Hawaii and Puerto Rico. The nuvi 250 has preloaded detailed mapping of the entire United States (including Alaska and Hawaii), Canada and Puerto Rico. For the ultimate ease in traveling abroad, the nuvi 270 includes preloaded detailed maps of the United States, Canada, Puerto Rico, and over 30 countries in Europe. All map data is provided by NAVTEQ(TM) — a world leader in premium-quality mapping — and includes approximately six million POI’s.

Garmin will also offer nuvi 200-series products with regional specific coverage for Europe, Australia, New Zealand, Mexico and Brazil. The regional coverage for Europe includes UK/Ireland, Nordics, Belgium/Netherlands/Luxembourg, France, Italy/Greece, Spain/Portugal, and Germany/Switzerland/Austria/Czech Republic.
The nuvi 200, nuvi 250 and nuvi 270 include a vehicle suction cup mount, vehicle power cable, dashboard disk, and owner’s reference manual. For more information, visit http://www.garmin.com/ or http://www.garmin.com/nuvi200 .

TAG Heuer watches inspired by auto racing

TAG Heuer, Racing | Comments (0) admin @ 9:29 am

Inspired by Auto Racing and Water Sports, TAG Heuer’s Latest Timepieces Master the Elements With Performance and Style

Driven by its DNA, TAG Heuer got a winning start today by announcing its sexy and sporty line of spring 2007 timepieces in advance of the annual Basel Watch and Jewelry Fair in Switzerland. Amongst awe-inspiring views, President and CEO TAG Heuer N.A. Ulrich Wohn along with Global Product and Design Director Stephane Linder unveiled the collection to an audience of more than 100 guests at the famed Top of the Rock venue at Rockefeller Center.

The collection includes a redesigned TAG Heuer Formula 1 line, 2007 Monaco Vintage Limited Edition, the latest SLR for Mercedes-Benz, the Aquaracer Automatic Chronograph Day-Date line and Aquaracer Calibre S models. All of these watches and chronographs personify the advanced design, exacting precision and reliability that has come to exemplify the TAG Heuer brand.

     TAG Heuer Formula 1:

Reinterpreted with a hot new look and dynamic range of colors TAG Heuer’s line of Formula 1 timepieces continues to evoke the “need for speed.” The collection retains its desirable six-sport watch features which include a screw-in crown, titanium carbide coated unidirectional turning bezel with raised fine-brushed steel numbers, water resistance to 200 meters, luminescent hands and markers, sapphire crystal and double safety clasp with extension system.

The watch is offered with a black, red or white dial and the chronograph with an orange, red, silver or black dial. Both the watches and chronographs are available on a stainless steel bracelet or rubber strap.
Monaco Vintage Limited Edition:

The latest iteration of the iconic square dial originally made famous by Steve McQueen, pays tribute to the Porsche-Gulf 917K racecar featured in the legendary cult film “Le Mans.” Beyond cool, this 2007 limited edition piece has a black dial with orange and blue stripes, vintage “GULF” logo at 6 o’clock and matching black alligator strap with orange stitching.
TAG Heuer SLR for Mercedes-Benz:

Demonstrating the strong alliance among TAG Heuer, Mercedes-Benz and McLaren, the 2007 TAG Heuer SLR for Mercedes-Benz evokes some of the distinctive design elements in the latest version of the Mercedes-Benz SLR 722.
The titanium-carbide black tachymeter bezel was inspired by the painted black carbon front spoiler and palladium-grey wheel rims while red painted hands reflect the red-painted brake calipers. Like the SLR 722, the timepiece represents power, precision and streamlined elegance.

The TAG Heuer for Mercedes-Benz will be offered as a limited edition of 3,500 pieces. It is available on a rubber strap that mirrors the SLR side grill or a stainless steel bracelet.

Aquaracer Automatic Chronograph Calibre 16 Day-Date:

Bigger and bolder with added functions, the newest Aquaracer is inspired by the precision-driven requirements of deep-sea diving. This sophisticated, masculine timepiece sports the Aquaracer’s long-admired dual bezel design and 43 mm case to house its Calibre 16 movement with additional day-date function. It is offered with a black, silver or blue dial on stainless steel bracelet or textured rubber strap.

The Aquaracer Automatic Chronograph Day-Date features the six TAG Heuer sports watch characteristics: unidirectional turning bezel with minutes scale and six studs for best diving-glove grip; double safety clasp; water resistance to 300 meters; screw-in crown; sapphire crystal with anti-reflective treatment; and luminescent hands and indexes.

The Aquaracer Calibre S:

Eagerly anticipated since its debut as a prototype in 2005, The Aquaracer Calibre S has finally arrived as the world’s easiest to read chronograph with Regatta countdown and multi-functions. The Calibre S is the first breakthrough in quartz-powered chronograph movements since they were invented in the early 1980s. Designed for competitive boat racing and yachting, and inspired by a sports car tachymeter, TAG Heuer’s exclusive and patented Calibre S movement incorporates two semi-circular sub-dials with bi-directional hands, which complement readings on the three main (hour/minute/second) hands.
Unlike traditional chronographs, which feature small counters that are complicated and difficult to read, the TAG Heuer Calibre S movement platform offers a more intuitive way to read the display than trying to decipher the position of tiny needles on three tiny sub-dials. The three central hands are always used to display either the elapsed hours/minutes/seconds in the Chronograph mode, the hours/minutes/seconds in the Time mode, or the remaining minutes/seconds in the Regatta countdown mode.

For additional functionality, the right semi-circular counter measures and displays 1/10th of a second in Chronograph mode. In the Time mode, the counters display the date. By simply pressing the crown, wearers can easily switch from standard Time mode to Chronograph mode or to Regatta countdown mode, with the active mode indicated by the small hand of the left semi-circular sub-dial. Each time a new mode is chosen, the three central hands are automatically set to the appropriate starting position. The 41mm dial is available in blue or anthracite.

Airbags linked to foot, ankle trauma

Auto News | Comments (0) admin @ 8:56 am

Members of the American College of Foot and Ankle Surgeons (ACFAS) say they’ve noticed a significant increase in traumatic foot and ankle injuries among patients who survived auto accidents. The reason? Air bags.

In 1998, the federal government started requiring dual front air bags in passenger cars. Since then, several research studies have documented a corresponding increase in lower extremity injuries. According to a federal report, drivers in air-bag equipped cars suffer more than 17,600 lower extremity injuries every year. One-third of those are to the foot and ankle.

While foot and ankle trauma is not life threatening, victims may face multiple surgeries, limited mobility and months or years of rehabilitation and physical therapy.

“We see trauma we never saw before,” says ACFAS President James L. Thomas, DPM, FACFAS, a foot and ankle trauma surgeon at the University of Alabama, Birmingham Hospital. “A decade ago, these patients would have died from head trauma or other upper body injuries. Now, thanks to seat belts and air bags, they survive.”

Foot and ankle surgeons meeting in Orlando this week for the ACFAS Annual Scientific Conference are discussing less-invasive techniques for treating traumatic injuries received in motor vehicle crashes and other incidents. A common technique is the use of internal or external fixation devices, which immobilize the foot and ankle, just like a cast. Internal fixation devices can involve a series of rods, screws and plates attached to bones, stabilizing them and permitting proper healing. External fixation devices appear as scaffolding on a building, with outside rods through the skin attached to bone underneath.
Many patients who suffer foot and ankle trauma in an auto crash — with or without air bags — face a long road to recovery. But the good news is, many patients do recover and lead a normal active lifestyle.

For more information on foot and ankle surgeons and the conditions they treat, visit the ACFAS consumer Web site FootPhysicians.com.
The American College of Foot and Ankle Surgeons (ACFAS) is a professional society of more than 6,000 foot and ankle surgeons. Founded in 1942, the College’s mission is to promote research and provide continuing education for the foot and ankle surgical specialty, and to educate the general public on foot health and conditions of the foot and ankle through its consumer website, http://www.footphysicians.com/.
